2. Hosting and server log files
When you visit this site, the server processes technically necessary data, in particular your IP address, the date and time of the request, the page requested and information about your browser. This serves the secure and stable operation of the site (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). The site is hosted by Render Services, Inc. (server location Frankfurt am Main, Germany). We do not know the exact retention period of the log files at Render; to our knowledge they are kept for no more than a few weeks.
3. Search function
When you start a search, your search terms and the selected destination country are sent to our server and forwarded from there to the eBay interface in order to retrieve matching listings. Your IP address is not passed on to eBay in the process. To avoid querying the eBay interface unnecessarily often, the server keeps the results of a search (search terms, destination country, sorting and the listings found) for up to 30 minutes in working memory only and then deletes them automatically. They are not written to disk, not linked to your IP address and not used for any other purpose. If someone repeats the same search during this time, they receive the same results (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR).
So that you can quickly repeat earlier searches, your browser stores locally on your device (local storage) your last up to ten search terms together with the details of the respective first result (image address, title, price, marketplace, item location, condition, shipping costs, delivery status and link to the listing). This information is not transmitted to us. You can remove single entries with the “×” or all of them with “Clear history”. In the same way, your browser also remembers up to 30 of your earlier search terms (text only) in order to show you matching suggestions from your own searches while you type in the search field. These terms are not transmitted to us either; you can remove a suggestion with the “×” next to it or all of them with “Clear history”. Your browser also remembers locally that you have already used the site to search (a simple marker without any content), so that the filter bar appears immediately on your next visit. On a repeat visit we also show newly listed offers for your most recent search: as soon as this area appears on your screen and the search is at least 30 minutes old, your browser transmits the search term and the selected destination country to our server, which sends one query to the eBay interface (as with a search, see above; the response is kept in working memory for up to 30 minutes). When the entries are displayed, your browser loads the preview images directly from eBay; for technical reasons eBay receives your IP address in the process (see section 7). The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a user-friendly presentation (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
If you save a search (“Save search” button below the result line), your browser stores up to 30 saved searches locally on your device (Local Storage): search term, destination country, sorting and the filters you chose. This information is not transmitted to us. You can remove it at any time with the “×” in the “Saved searches” list. With “Transfer to another device” your browser creates a link and a QR code that contain your saved searches. Both are created exclusively in your browser; the part of the link after the “#” is not sent to our server when a page is opened. How you get the link to your other device (e.g. by message or email) is up to you; only share it with yourself. The QR code is created in your browser with a small software library (licence: MIT); no data is sent to third parties.
4. Protection against abuse
To protect against excessive requests, the server counts search requests per IP address. The address is kept only briefly in working memory for this purpose and is deleted after the time window of a few minutes has expired (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
5. Language and delivery country
On your first visit, the server suggests the interface language and a delivery country matching the country from which you access the site. For this purpose, your IP address is briefly compared in working memory with a country database stored locally on the server; it is not stored in the process and not passed on to third parties. If your browser is set to Chinese, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, Thai, Turkish, Hebrew, Malay, Icelandic, Estonian, Latvian, Lithuanian, Slovenian, Croatian, Maltese, Greek or Bulgarian, that language is suggested instead (“Accept-Language” header, which your browser sends with every request). If the country cannot be determined, the language setting of your browser is used as well. The country assignment is based on data from DB-IP.com (licence CC BY 4.0). If you choose a different language yourself, your browser stores this choice locally (local storage) so that it applies on your next visit; this information is not transmitted to us. Likewise, your browser stores locally (local storage) how many results you display side by side (zoom slider); this information is not transmitted to us. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in a user-friendly presentation (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR).
6. Display currency and exchange rates
Your selected display currency is stored locally by your browser on your device (local storage) so that it is kept for your next visit. This information is not transmitted to us. Our server retrieves exchange rates from the European Central Bank; no data about you is transmitted in the process.
7. Item images from eBay
Your browser loads the item images directly from eBay servers. For technical reasons eBay receives your IP address in the process (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). We have no influence on this.
8. Links to eBay and partner programme
The links to eBay listings are affiliate links of the eBay Partner Network. When you click such a link, you are taken to an eBay page. eBay and the partner programme may use cookies or similar technologies to record that you came via our site, so that we receive a commission on a purchase. eBay is responsible for this; please refer to eBay’s privacy notices. On our site itself we do not use any tracking or analytics cookies.
9. Audience measurement with GoatCounter
To evaluate how often the site is visited, how often searches are made and how often visitors click through to eBay, we use the visitor counter GoatCounter (goatcounter.com). GoatCounter works without cookies and does not store IP addresses. It records the page view, the referring page (referrer), browser and operating system, screen size and country of origin. For clicks to eBay, only the eBay country site that was visited is counted; when the language is changed, only the selected language is counted; search terms are not transmitted. This does not allow us to identify individual persons. The statistics are deleted after 12 months. The legal basis is our legitimate interest in audience analysis (Art. 6(1)(f) GDPR). GoatCounter sets no cookies and stores no data on your device; the counting script merely reads a few technical details of your browser (screen size, referrer, browser) and transmits them solely for anonymous statistics, not to recognise individual visitors.
10. Contacting us
If you contact us by email, we process your details to handle your enquiry (Art. 6(1)(b) and (f) GDPR) and delete them as soon as they are no longer required.
11. Your rights
You have the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability and objection. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with a data protection supervisory authority; the authority responsible for our place of business in Saxony, Germany, is the Saxon Data Protection Commissioner (Sächsischer Datenschutzbeauftragter).
